I have enjoyed reading your comments! I'm glad to see that you understand the skills taugh in class, and you enjoy class. After reading your comments, I will work on including more examples and practice of the skill for you in class. My favorite comment came from a fifth grade student, and his example of a subordinate clause..."beacuse I said so!" A parent's favorite subordinate clause!

How are sentence fragments and subordinate clauses alike and different?
Both - Cannot stand alone and do not express a complete thought
Sentence Fragment - has either a subject or predicate BUT DOES NOT CONTAIN BOTH
Subordinate Clause - has a subject and predicate and begins with a subordinating conjunctions

Monday
All grades will be responding to Sentence Structure Journals
Tuesday
All grades will be introduced to Complex Sentence. Students will be given sentence structure notes and begin identifying the difference between an independent and subordinate clause
Wednesday
All grades will continue practing identifying complex sentences and the parts of a complex sentence (independent and subordinate clauses)
Thursday
6th Grade Girls - Field trip
5th Grade - Identify the difference between complex, compound, simple sentence
6th Grade Boys and 7th Grade - Identify the difference between complex, compound, simple sentence and how to write each kind
Friday
6th Grade - Field Trip
5th Grade and 7th Grade - Test on complex, compound, simple sentences and sentence structure definitions
NOTE - Sixth Grade will be tested Tuesday on complex, compund, simple sentences and sentence structure definitions.

Sentence Structure Definitions
- Complex Sentence - is a sentence that contains an independent clause and one or more subordinate(dependent) clauses.
- Compound Sentence - contains two independent clauses
- Sentence - word or group of words that have a subject and a predicate and express a complete thought
- Simple Sentence - contains one independent clause
- Complete Subject - ALL the words that tell who or what the sentence is about
- Simple Subject - the main word or words that tell who or what the sentence is about
- Complete Predicate - the verb and ALL the words that describe the verb and complete the sentence meaning
- Simple Predicate - the word or words that tell what the subject is doing. The simple predicate is the VERB
Don't be fooled by a Subordinate (dependent clause)
Subordinate (dependent) Clause
A subordinate clause does not express a complete though and cannot stand alone as a sentence.
Subordinate clauses DEPEND on an independent clause to make a sentence and express a complete thought.
BE CAREFUL subordinate clauses can contain a subject and predicate.

Parts of Speech Unit September - November
Since the beginning of school we have been working on parts of speech. This is a lengthy skill, where each grade level has a different aspect of the eight parts of speech to focus on. The depth and complexity of the skill depends on the grade. Please follow our journey through parts of speech at http://www.georgiastandards.org/ The website will give you a description of the standard and the topics covered. We are are projected to complete parts of speech by November. The unit will end with a parts of speech performance assessment.
