Last week in Language Arts 09-22 thru 09-26

Last week in Language Arts we worked on verb tense, irregular verbs transitive and intransitive verbs and subject verb agreement.

The fifth graders did well with the skill of verb tense and irregular verbs. Even though we are moving on to a new skill please continue to review and study irregular verbs.

The seventh graders worked on subject-verb agreement. They did well identifying errors in stand alone sentences, but I would like them to use their understanding of the skill to work on finding errors in paragraphs. There will be a proof reading quiz coming up soon :-)

The sixth graders worked on transitive and intransitive verbs. We found this to be a difficult skill, and I would recommend continuing the practice of the skill be visiting one of the grammar websites for additional support as well as to review the transitive and intransitive verb check list. Even though we are moving onto a new skill, transitive and intransitive verbs will pop up sometime in the coming week :-)

Transitive and Intransitive Verb Checklist

The verb is transitive when:
*the verb is followed closely by a noun - Door is a noun
*clearly can tell what the subject did - Greg opened what? the door
Example - Greg opened the door.

The verb is intransitive when:
*the sentence can end at the verb - The dog ran. (this is a complete sentence)
*the verb is followed by a word that tell when, where, how or how often - quickly down the street tells how and where the dog ran
Example - The dog ran quickly down the street.

Don't be fooled by a Subordinate (dependent clause)

Subordinate (dependent) Clause

A subordinate clause does not express a complete though and cannot stand alone as a sentence.

Subordinate clauses DEPEND on an independent clause to make a sentence and express a complete thought.

BE CAREFUL subordinate clauses can contain a subject and predicate.

Parts of Speech Unit

Parts of Speech Unit September - November
Since the beginning of school we have been working on parts of speech. This is a lengthy skill, where each grade level has a different aspect of the eight parts of speech to focus on. The depth and complexity of the skill depends on the grade. Please follow our journey through parts of speech at http://www.georgiastandards.org/ The website will give you a description of the standard and the topics covered. We are are projected to complete parts of speech by November. The unit will end with a parts of speech performance assessment.
